Key species
Las Tángaras ProAves Reserve is one of the most diverse and important tropical forest sites on Earth. There are almost 4,000 hectares that protect the Atrato River basin (the most important river in Chocó), which serves as a vital economic resource for tens of thousands of inhabitants who live in the surrounding rural communities. The acquisition of this land helps to consolidate a safety zone for the protection of biodiversity, against rapid and unsustainable development, and reinforces the protection of several threatened indigenous communities.
Location and area
The Reserve is located near several reservations of the Embera indigenous community and its objective is to cushion a new growing wave of settlers eager to exploit the rich natural resources of the area (See map).
Ecosystem
The area that makes up the Reserve is made up of native forests formerly belonging to the La Victoria, Cincinnati and Vistanieves coffee farms, who have been cultivating in the region going back more than a century.
How to get there
Las Tángaras ProAves Reserve is located in the Municipality of Carmen de Atrato, department of Chocó, 140 kilometers from Medellín, an approximate travel time of 4 or 5 hours.
Route: Medellín – Carmen de Atrato.
You must take a bus at the Terminal del Sur that goes to the municipality of Carmen de Atrato, Chocó, to a place called El Siete or La Sánchez. From El Siete you take a Jeep to the Las Tángaras Reserve.
Route: Medellín- Quibdó:
You must take a bus from the South Terminal that goes to Quibdó, capital of Chocó, to El Ocho, where the Reserve is located.
Note: from the Reserve cabin to the trails is a trip of 8km, so visitors must reserve transportation in advance or have their own. It doesn’t need to be a 4×4 vehicle. The approximate cost of this round-trip transportation is about $50 USD.
